The economy added a net 290,000 jobs but that didn’t stop unemployment from going up to 9.9% from 9.7% last month.

The unemployment rate rose in April, mainly because a flood of 805,000 jobseekers — perhaps feeling better about their prospects — resumed their searches for work.

Many economists have predicted the unemployment rate would rise as people come back into the labor force. The jobless rate hit 10.1 percent in October, a 26-year high. The rate could climb back up to the 10 percent range in the months ahead, said Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors.

The betting exchange market painted a more grim picture. 

At the online betting exchange, intrade.com, most were backing a 10.5% to 10.75% year-end unemployment rate.

The Sprint Cup Series in NASCAR moves to Las Vegas this week for the Shelby American on Sunday.  Jimmie Johnson is the 4-1 favorite in NASCAR odds at SBG Global but there are a number of other contenders.  Johnson is coming off a win last week at California and has won this race three times (2005-2007).  He has had problems the last two years though, finishing 24th and 29th.  It is pretty much all or nothing for Johnson in Las Vegas which is just how it is for many gamblers who visit the city.

Jeff Gordon has not started this season very well but he could turn things around in Vegas.  He won this race in 2001 and in the past five years he has finished sixth or better in four of the five races. Gord

LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas sports books are counting down to Super Bowl Sunday. The big game means big business for Las Vegas, and casinos expect to cash in on this weekend’s game. The game pits the AFC Champion Indianapolis Colts against the NFC Champion New Orleans Saints.

Bettors are already flooding the Las Vegas Hilton Race and Sports Book and looking to get some action on the game. "I figured if you can’t be there live, this is the next best place," said bettor and Arizona visitor Monte Hoopes. "I’m a Peyton Manning fan, so I’m rooting for the Colts." Arizona visitor Greg Impellitier is counting on the New Orleans Saints to pull off a victory.

Their belief that smoking dried vulture brains and other ancient ‘muti’ (organic traditional medicines) has resulted in a depletion in the vulture population, reports the UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph.

“Wildlife experts have warned that vultures face extinction in South Africa amid a growing trend for smoking their dried brains in order to have a vision of winning lottery numbers,” the newspaper reports this week.

Experts say that within 20 to 30 years the rare birds could be hunted to extinction for their use in “muti”, or traditional medicine.
