New Jersey lawmakers have been moving quickly on a bill that would make the state the first to regulate online gambling in the US. On Monday, the Senate Budget Committee approved the legislation, paving the way for the bill to move along in the state legislature.

Senator Ray Lesniak has been the driving force behind online gambling expansion in New Jersey. With state race tracks and Atlantic City casinos struggling, Lesniak has introduced legislation that would help both industries out with millions of dollars in increased revenue.

The online gambling rooms would only be allowed to offer their services to customers within the state of New Jersey.

John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance, has advised that the action group for the legalisation of online poker is to change its strategy in Washington state, lobbying lawmakers to change the state’s draconian anti-online gambling laws rather than fight cases through the courts.

The PPA decision is no doubt motivated by the recent finding by the state Supreme Court that the legislature is acting within its powers, and that the state ban does not contravene commerce clauses in the US Constitution. The ruling resulted in Pokerstars withdrawing its internet poker offering from the state.

Pappas opined this week: “It would be a big challenge just to get the U.S.

A dispute with a neighbouring mayor has brought forth some interesting facts and figures on the British enclave of Gibraltar, a financial services and online gambling jurisdiction at the entrance to the Mediterranean, and adjacent to Spain.

The publication Panorama reports that rumblings about “The Rock’s” involvement in online gambling from the mayor of neighbouring La Linea prompted it to make a few local enquiries regarding the business. The publication approached Dr Joseph Garcia, the leader of the Liberal Party and opposition MP on Gibraltar, asking for information on the turnover and tax paid by online gambling companies domiciled in Gibraltar.

The vexed question of whether the Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association (iMEGA) or the Interactive Gaming Council (IGC) have legal standing in a long-running fight to stop the state governor of Kentucky seizing international internet domain names is again in the headlines after a Kentucky Supreme Court ruling late last week.

The court has for a second time ruled that the owners of Internet gambling operations need to show up in court to establish legal standing if they don’t want the state to seize the domain names of their Web sites, reports the Associated Press news agency.

Justices of the court ruled that trade associations like iMEGA and the IGC don’t have standing to represent the owners of gambling Web sites.
