Online Gambling=Happy Family? The world of gambling has been perceived by many to be one that breaks up families. Gamblers spend much time out of their homes and away from their families while trying to hit that big jackpot. Now, with the possibility existing that Internet gambling may be regulated in the US, there are people who believe those changes may help the family dynamic.
“Right now there are many gamblers who do not have the freedom to safely relax in the comfort of their own homes and play a slot machine if they want. These people go out and get away from their families to enjoy their leisure time. If Internet gambling becomes regulated, these people would be spending much more time home with their families,” said observer Tabitha Kelly.
Gambling opponents have long claimed that any form of gambling can be dangerous and that many families have been negatively affected. That may be true on the surface, but a look deeper into the issue gives some validity to Kelly’s point of view.
Currently, millions of people in the US partake in some form of gambling. The perceived legal types are lottery’s, and while there are some cases of problem gambling among lottery players, for the most part they are family oriented citizens.
Land based casino gambling, however, presents the problem that Kelly speaks of. Many individuals leave their families at home to go out to a casino. Then, once there, they can spend hours upon hours in the casinos losing track of both time and reality.
“If people could openly enjoy their gambling entertainment online at home, there would be no need to leave the house. they also would be surrounded by their family, so the temptation to forget real life would not occur. It would cause not only less problem gambling, but also more responsible gaming,” said Kelly.
The other problem that occurs these days is people getting into financial, or even worse, legal trouble when out in casinos. If the Internet gambling industry was properly regulated by the US government, much of this problem would go away. With betting limits and safeguards in place at online sites, it would become more difficult for people to work themselves into a jam.
The debate over Internet gambling will certainly heat up in the next few weeks. Representative Barney Frank has already said he will be introducing a Bill to Congress that would regulate the industry. At that time, there will be angles taken by lawmakers on both sides of the debate, and one of those angles, surprisingly, might be how regulated Internet gambling could make life better, not worse for the average US family.
